Help, My Period is Missing!
Has your period all of a sudden gone MIA? Your body is trying to tell you something.
A women’s cycle is not just about fertility but a key sign of overall health.
If your period is missing it could be due to stress, nutrient deficiencies, caloric deficiencies, blood sugar imbalances, or hormonal disruptions.
One of the reasons I see this occurring in women is because they are working out intensely without properly fueling themselves and are running off of fumes and caffeine. This can lead to Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (HA), where your brain stops signaling the ovaries to ovulate and therefore preventing a period from taking place.
The first sign HA might be occurring is that you have missed your period for 3+ months. Other symptoms of HA include:
low mood
low energy
poor sleep
anxiety
low libido
acne
thinning hair
brittle nails
So how do we get the hypothalamus to communicate to our ovaries again?
First, we need to ensure adequate caloric and nutrient intake. Our body needs nutrient dense calories from healthy fats, complex carbs, and protein to support ovulation and provide the building blocks to make sufficient amounts of estrogen and progesterone for our cycle.
Second, rest is SUPER important. When you train intensely without enough recovery time, your body can enter a state of chronic stress. This disrupts your hormonal balance and contributes to HA.
Third, there are herbals and supplements that can help provide extra support in replenishing key nutrients. Since our body is in such a deficit, a time of personalized supplements and herbal medicines can help alongside diet and lifestyle changes. These supplements can also help to support related organs, such as your thyroid, which also plays a huge role in menstrual health.
Whatever reason you are trying to regulate your cycle - preparing for pregnancy, boosting energy - a targeted holistic nutrition plan can help to bring it back!
