5 Steps for Healthy Skin
Many of us can feel self-conscious about our skin as it’s the first thing any one sees. I have personally struggled with eczema and it leaving patches on my face. Here are tips that I found helpful in healing my skin from within:
1. Limit what harms your skin
Refined sugars, refined grains (white breads & pasta), processed foods with a long shelf life, refined vegetable oils all promote acne and inflammation
Pesticides on produce and certain ingredients in personal care products (ie. Parabens, fragrance/parfum) can disrupt your hormones causing imbalances and reactions such as eczema
Stress and lack of sleep increases inflammation and causes hormonal imbalances
2. Tend to the root cause – your gut!
Your skin is often an outward reflection of your gut health; if your skin is inflamed and upset so is your gut!
Ensuring good gut bacteria aids in healthy skin. You can do this by eating probiotic foods such as sauerkraut, yogurt, kefir, kimchi, and apple cider vinegar
Eating fibre-rich foods helps keep things moving along and prevents estrogen excess causes imbalances. Fibre-rich foods can include apples, pears, prunes, berries, avocados, broccoli, brussels sprouts, lentils, chickpeas
3. Increase intake of foods that are good for your skin
Spices such as turmeric, ginger, garlic, and cinnamon are rich in antioxidants and help reduce inflammation
Healthy fats from nuts + seeds and fish provide essential fatty acids and vitamin D to help with hormonal health and reducing inflammation
Clean protein sources, such as chicken, wild caught fish, nuts, free range eggs, help provide our body with the supplies it needs to build and repair tissue
Cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage) help to detoxify our body and balance hormones
Green tea helps fight off acne and guard against skin cancer
4. Prioritize Sleep
Good sleep hygiene is vital to healthy skin as healing and regeneration happens mostly while you sleep
To help you sleep limit your caffeine intake after mid-morning, avoid blue-light an hour before bed, and avoid sugar intake 2 hours before bed
Drinking herbal teas such as chamomile can help promote relaxation before bed
5. Revaluate your skincare products
Use EWG product search to help you learn what products are cleaner choices for your skin
Many personal care products contain hormone disrupting chemicals and allergens such as parabens, fragrance, phthalates, aluminum and more!
Are you struggling with acne? Eczema? Psoriasis? It is most likely your bodies way of telling you there is something going on inside your gut that needs some attention.
